![]() Operating instructions for firing these things are basically just "aim, and pull the lever." These things are all made to be about as straight-forward as possible to operate. I would probably say that artificers have the proficiency automatically (due to the affinity with similar weapons). And perhaps a feat (likely with bonuses to their use) and perhaps even a Fighter Specialization as other alternatives. You could even call that "siege weapon proficiency" in your campaign, and allow players to gain it through training if they are interested. Anyway, siege weapons usually require a trained crew just to be able to fire, you would likely be unable to even fire one, and actually be likely to injure yourself if you try to operate one on your own without at least some proficiency with it.Īfter that, feel free to create new NPCs with an extra ability to use siege weapons because (for example) they are part of a renowned mercenary unit specialised in sieges. While I agree with you technically, I would personally rule that someone without some sort of proficiency would not be able to use it. Instead they have a flat +6 to hit, take one action to load, a second action to aim, and a third action to fire. Due to their design, they don't require proficiency to operate.
